Xīnběishì 新北市
The City
Not to be confused with the capital of Taiwan (Taipei City), New Taipei City (新北市 Xīnběishì in Mandarin, literally ‘New North City’) is both a city in itself and a region surrounding the cities of Taipei and Keelung.
What to see
Take in the stunning natural wonders of Yangmingshan National Park, Yehliu Geopark and Laomei Green Reef, and admire the old houses in the little town of Shiding.
What to do
Take a day trip to the mountain seaside area of 九份 Jiǔfèn, and visit the famous beautiful teahouse, Amei Teahouse. If you’re a tea lover, you’ll also enjoy a hike at Sanxia Xiong Kong Tea Plantation.
And since you’re so close to Taipei, why not hop on a train and take a trip to the capital of Taiwan itself too?
What to eat
As well as much-loved Taiwanese classics like bubble tea, beef noodle soup and three cup chicken, there are a few special spots specific to New Taipei City that are worth a visit. Don’t miss the various tofu dishes at the 30-year-old restaurant, 大樹下豆腐三吃 Da Shu Xia Three Dish Tofu (literally ‘three tofu meals under the big tree’ – and there is, indeed, a big tree at the restaurant). Whereas 阿城鵝肉 Acheng Goose specialises in goose: roasted, salted, smoked and lots more.
If you’re feeling peckish later on at night, head to Banqiao District and hit Nanya Night Market for plenty of delicious snacks.
