A melting pot of different Asian cultures, Singapore city is the capital city of the Republic of Singapore (新加坡共和国, ‘Xīnjiāpō Gònghéguó). The country itself is located at the southern tip of the Peninsular (West) Malaysia.
Before you leave the airport, visit Jewel Changi Airport for the famous Rain Vortex, Walking Net and Mirror Maze.
In the city centre, take a selfie with the iconic Merlion, and see the views from the top floor bar of the Marina Bay Sands hotel. Then head over to Gardens By the Bay to check out Cloud Forest, and wait for the sun to go down to enjoy the Garden Rhapsody music and light show at the Super Trees.
Hit the shops on Orchard Road, walk around Kampong Glam, enjoy a day trip at Sentosa Island, and take a tour of the historical Raffles Hotel. Don’t forget to enjoy a Singapore Sling at Raffles’ Long Bar too – the birthplace of the iconic cocktail.
Enjoy sweet kaya toast with salty half-boiled eggs for breakfast, then hit Chinatown and Little India for South, East, and Southeast Asian cuisine. Look out for (savoury, stir-fried) carrot cake, chilli crab, roti canai, banana leaf curry, laksa noodles, satay, and ABC shaved ice dessert. There’s also a wealth of great hawker centres each with a variety of food stalls, for example, Lau Pa Sat and Maxwell Food Centre.
Look out for Singapore’s ‘ice cream uncles’ selling ice cream sandwiches – your choice of ice cream flavour sandwiched in a slice of soft, slightly sweet bread. There are often a few stalls along Orchard Road.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try the world’s stinkiest fruit – durian.
Singapore has four official languages: Malay, Chinese Mandarin, English and Tamil, with the main national language being Malay. But Singaporeans are also known for speaking Singlish – a unique patois combining English, Mandarin, Malay, and a few other Chinese and Asian dialects.
