Táinán 台南

The City

Officially called 台南市 Táinán Shì (‘Tainan City’), Tainan was the first capital of Taiwan and remained so until 1887. And because of its rich history and many changes in power over time (for example, through Dutch, Chinese and Japanese rule), it’s also been nicknamed ‘The Phoenix City’.

What to see

See the oldest Confucian temple in Taiwan, 台南孔子庙 Táinán Kǒngzǐ Miào – Tainan Confucius Temple, visit former Dutch outpost 赤嵌楼 Chìqiàn Lóu – Chihkan Tower (also known as Fort Provintia/Providentia), and see the huge banyan trees that have completely taken over an old warehouse at 安平树屋 Ānpíng Shù Wū – Anping Treehouse.

What to do

Walk around 台南公园 Táinán Gōngyuán – Tainan Park, check out the boutique shops along 神农街 Shénnóng Jiē – Shennong Street, and eat at night markets like 花园夜市 Huāyuán Yèshì – Garden Night Market and 大东夜市 Dàdōng Yèshì – Dadong Night Market (also known as Ta-Tung Night Market).

What to eat

Tainan is also known as Taiwan’s food capital, so you won’t go hungry! Make sure you try local specialities like 米糕 mǐ gāo – sticky rice pork, 棺材板 guāncai bǎn ‘coffin bread’ – a thick bread bowl with cream stew, 牛肉汤 niúròu tāng – breakfast beef soup, and 鳝鱼意面 shànyú yìmiàn – eel noodles.

Did You Know?

Tainan isn’t just the first capital of Taiwan – it’s also the oldest city in Taiwan, and is sometimes thought of as the birthplace of the country.
