The capital and largest urban centre of Yilan County, Yilan City lies on the northeast coast of Taiwan. Spring and Autumn (March–April and October–November) are usually the best times to visit as the weather is pleasantly warm and relatively dry.
Take selfies with the human-sized statues at 宜蘭幾米公園 Yílán Jǐmǐ Gōngyuán, (Jimmy Park) (near Yilan train station), see the Lego-inspired sculptures at 積木博物館 Jīmù Bówùguǎn (the Brick Art Museum), and visit some of the beautiful temples like 碧霞宮 Bìxiá Gōng (Bisia Temple) and 孔子廟 Kǒngzǐ Miào (Confucious Temple).
As well as seeing the attractions in the city, the wider Yilan County is also home to some beautiful natural spots. Book a tour to 龜山島 Guīshān Dǎo (Guishan Island/Turtle Island), and take a day trip to 太平山國家森林遊樂區 Tàipíngshān Guójiā Sēnlín Yóulè Qū (Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area).
You can also visit the other two of Yilan County’s urban centres: the townships of 礁溪 Jiāoxī and 羅東 Luódōng. Jiaoxi is known for its hot springs and waterfalls, and Luodong is known for Luodong Night Market.
Be sure to enjoy Yilan favourites 蔥油餅 cōng yóu bǐng (green onion pancakes), 蒜味肉羹 suàn wèi ròu gēng (thick garlic pork soup) and 花生冰淇淋卷 huāshēng bīngqílín juǎn (peanut ice cream rolls).
Although not as famous as Luodong Night Market, Dongmen Night Market is also a great place to enjoy street food in Yilan City.
Yilan County is the birthplace of Taiwanese opera (歌仔戲 gēzǐxì, also sometimes known as Hokkien opera), which is also the only form of Han Chinese opera known to have originated from Taiwan.
